Research Highlight

29 July 2026
Our Richard Ghail and Eloise Crouch with Philippa Mason of Imperial have published a paper in Earth and Planetary Science Letters making a compelling case that Venus once supported water oceans and for a climate catastrophe on Venus at a time when Earth had fish, reptiles and forests. That an Earth-like planet can self-sterilise through a runaway greenhouse has profound implications for exoplanets and life in the universe, as well as for the future of life on Earth.
